Farlington Marshes

Starlings in flight over Farlington Marshes

Farlington Marshes is a Hampshire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, located just of the A27 between Portsmouth and Havant. It is a wetland nature reserve and overlooks Portsmouth Harbour. The reserve is a wild bird grazing marsh, with lagoons, and it attracts over wintering wildfowl, especially Brent or Brant Geese which can gather there in large numbers.

The reserve has cattle that are grazed on it, and if you visit with a dog it must be kept on a lead. Visitors must stick to the paths which run around and across the reserve. Full details and a map can be found on the reserve webpage. The trust also run a blog that reports on recent sightings on their solent reserves – so that is always worth a check before visiting to see what might be there to photograph.

The reserve does not have any hides, and being coastal can be fairly exposed. There are some seats available around the reserve. The path is mainly a rough gravel path, with some grass tracks.

Some views can be taken from here, and sailing can be seen, but the main reason to visit this reserve for a photographer would be for wildlife photography.
