Mount Untersberg

Salzburger Hochthron Summit Cross

Mount Untersberg is an impressive mountain near Salzburg ( It’s the northern most massif of the Berchesgaden Alps ).  It is easily accessible by cable car, a short distance from Salzburg.  I visited it this year in late August for the first time, getting a bus from the hotel to the cable car station.  From there it was a short ride to the mountain station.  Great view can be had from the station itself, and easy paths allow for a nice walk along the summit ridges.

It was a glorious day when I went up the mountain, as can be seen in the photos here.  I walked as far as the Salzburger Hochthron summit, a short stroll and small climb from the mountain station itself.  From here the views were superb, ranging into Germany itself and the Berchesgaden Alp range.  Views into Austria offered a marvelous view over Salzburg and beyond.

On this trip I was using a loaned Olympus EM5 mark II camera and mostly a 12-40mm Pro Lens.  This was to keep weight to the minimum on the trip.

Here are some of the views from the summit.

Whilst sitting taking in the views – this Alpine Chough came and sat on the bench next to me.  Talk about close to nature!

From there I walked down the path back towards the mountain station.  The worst of the path( which is still easy) is shown below, the rest is flat gravel.

There was a monument on the route back that I think is a memorial to a pilot.

Finally there is another mountain cross that offers a dramatic view, near an impressive cliff edge.
